Space and Satellite Engineering

This course provides an introduction to the fundamentals of orbital mechanics, satellite design, and mission operations. Covering a wide range of topics, it aims to equip participants with the foundational knowledge needed to understand satellite subsystems, communication systems, propulsion, and mission planning. The course also touches on the basics of space law and policy, satellite reliability, and autonomous systems in space operations.

Objectives:

  • Understand the core principles of orbital mechanics and mission design.

  • Gain knowledge of basic satellite subsystems including power, propulsion, and thermal control.

  • Learn about satellite communication systems, data handling, and radar/optical payloads.

  • Explore the principles of satellite reliability, testing, and qualification.

  • Understand the basics of space law, policy, and ethical considerations in space activities.

  • Gain hands-on experience with mission planning and satellite operations through a capstone project.

Prerequisites:

  • Basic understanding of physics and mathematics, particularly in mechanics and dynamics. 

  • Familiarity with basic engineering principles. 

  • No prior space-specific experience required, but a general understanding of engineering concepts is beneficial.
